Measurement of lineal energy distributions for ion beams using a wall-less tissue equivalent proportional counter

Deposit energy distribution in microscopic site in a living cell is important information for understanding of biological effects of energetic heavy ion beams. In this work, a wall-less tissue equivalent proportional counter has been used for the measurement of lineal energy ($$y$$) distributions and dose-mean of $$y$$ ($$overline{y}$$$$_{D}$$) at radial direction of 30 MeV H at TIARA, for the verification of the microdosimetric function of PHITS. The measured $$yf$$ ($$y$$) summed in radial direction agree with the corresponding data from the microdosimetric calculations using the PHITS code fairly well. The $$overline{y}$$$$_{D}$$ of 30 MeV proton beam presents the smallest value at $$r$$ = 0.0 and gradually increase with radial distance, while the values of heavy ions such as iron showed rapid decrease with radial distance. This experimental result demonstrates that the stochastic deposit energy distribution of high-energy protons in microscopic region is rather constant both in the core and in the penumbra region of the track structure.

Corrosion rate of carbon steel in NaCl solution with various chloride ion concentration under $$gamma$$-ray irradiation

Corrosion rates of carbon steel in chloride aqueous solutions under a low dose rate were investigated by corrosion test using chloride aqueous solutions with different chloride concentrations. The corrosion rate of carbon steel had the maximum value at a certain concentration at a dose rate of 500Gy/h. The oxidants produced by radiolysis of chloride aqueous solution enhanced the corrosion of carbon steel. The dependence of corrosion rate and chloride concentration has a positive correlation with the dependence of oxidant concentration and chloride concentration.

The Role of nitric oxide in radiation-induced bystander cell-killing effect

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in bystander effect was investigated. Human fibroblasts were irradiated with $$gamma$$-rays (LET: 0.2 keV/$$mu$$m) or carbon-ion beam (108 keV/$$mu$$m), and then, co-cultured with the non-irradiated cells. After 24 h culture, the survival rates of non-irradiated cells and the concentrations of nitrate, an oxide of NO, in the medium were measured. The survival rates of non-irradiated cells decreased in dose-dependent and radiation quality-independent manners. Negative relationships between survival rates and nitrite concentrations existed, indicating the amounts of produced NO are an important determinant of bystander effects. Next, a reagent producing two molecules of NO in a half-life of 100 min was added in the culture medium. After incubation of 24 h the survival rates of treated cells did not decrease, suggesting NO produced intracellularly has an important role to lead the bystander effect but is not the signal molecule for intercellular communication.

Utilization status of the electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities

The electron accelerator and the three $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities of Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute were operated for various research subjects according to the operation plan in FY 2014. The number of research subjects in FY 2014 decreased at the electron accelerator with operation stop by accelerator trouble, and increased slightly at the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities as compared with FY 2013, and research subjects were 205 and 857, respectively. Among these research subjects, 35 and 172 related to recovery from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear disaster, respectively, were performed at the electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities, respectively.

Degradation behavior of LED by $$gamma$$ irradiation

$$gamma$$ irradiation effects on LEDs which were fabricated by different two fabricators and had relatively large amount of light were evaluated toward the development of a radiation-resistant in-water wireless transmission system using visible light. The current-voltage characteristics and total luminous flux of the LEDs were measured before and after the irradiation. After the irradiation, the total luminous flux decreased and the resin lenses turned oxblood. Meanwhile, the current-voltage characteristics hardly changed. These results indicated that the decreases of the total luminous flux of the LEDs were mainly caused by not the degradation of the semiconductor parts but the coloring of the resin parts by the irradiation. On the other hand, the decrease rates of the total lumious fluxes with $$gamma$$ absorbed dose of the LEDs fabricated one fabricator were smaller than the others. Therefore, they are possible candidates for the light emitting devices of the developing in-water transmission system.

Operation of the electron accelerator and the $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities

This paper reports on the operation status of the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities and the electron accelerator in fiscal 2014 at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute of JAEA. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were operated smoothly, whereas the electron accelerator stopped for five months because of successive troubles of discharge due to deterioration of equipment over thirty-four years. The annual operation times of the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities of the first, second and food buildings were 19,907, 13,831 and 7,293 hours, respectively, and that of the electron accelerator was 746 hours. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were replenished with new five sources of 2.22 PBq, and twenty old sources were removed for disposal. The electron accelerator was repaired for each trouble, however, the complete recovery has not yet been achieved.
